lyrics
i took a step from my bedroom in evans georgia to a little dorm room in a college town. a variation on the same ten posters and pushpin holes when you take them down. i didn't like it so i slept at my girlfriends or on somebody's floor when i got plastered, like when i was sixteen making a bong out of a two-liter but with the guilty walk of shame the morning after.
and some nights i slept in a bag on the floor cause it reminded me of traveling round the whole wide world, do they still make glow in the dark stars for twenty year olds? i'm just a-scouring the earth to find a bedroom that feels like a home.
for months i slept in a bunkhouse and it wasn't that bad. i got bed bug bites on my legs but i took them like a champ. i washed my hair in the sink of a greyhound in toronto, cause you can really take a bath anytime anywhere depending on how bad you want to. camping under the same sky dozens of times. you know they tap into our phones, we're always being watched by dozens of eyes. but you know that one of the wonderful things about sleeping outside is that the bugs and the mice and coyotes got nothing to hide.
utilities due i signed a contract too making me a feudal serf until the lease is through but a semi-flat surface and a roof is all i need to make due. suburbia's a bitch and i don't want a ranch house for a tomb.
i really don't mean to be a preacher but let's lace up our sneakers cause the american dream shouldn't keep us on the bleachers or in oversized boxes we furnish and groom. ikea's your cathedral when you worship a room. cause if you never leave your house you never take to the streets. never see the ugly factories that used to be trees. but at least your kids will listen to authorities cause as long as they stay in their box they'll be free.
but remember the days after school when you'd fight with your folks for just a little more time on your bike with the neighborhood kids and the forts that you built in the woods. was there a day we all decided to give up on adventure for good? i'm not saying we should start a revolution but we probably could. but i don't want to get evicted so i'll probably just stay put.
